The Dark Knight lives up to the hype

By Jon Chattman
The Dark Knight is that rare film that actually lives up to the hype. To put it simply, the movie isn’t only the best movie of the year so far – it’s the best movie of last year, and the year before that. This isn’t just a superhero movie; this is epic moviemaking. Packed with a wickedly good script, a strong central performance by Christian Bale and stellar supporting performances – this should garner an Oscar nomination for the late Heath Ledger, whose turn as The Joker is a revelation – the movie provides as much substance as it has style. It’s a thrilling roller coaster ride that never lets up. Case in point: the worst part of the movie for me? When I had to go to the bathroom after holding it for two hours.
Many critics will go on and on and on about the story, but I won’t do that here. The story is essentially a new criminal who kills for sport and wants to rid the town of Batman, and a District Attorney named Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) whose trying to end the mob’s run of the city. The movie goes so much deeper than that, but that’s all you need to know. Believe the hype, though. Bale is a force as Batman and Wayne, but this is Ledger’s show. You can’t take your eyes off of him. Try shaking his character off after you leave the theater. You won’t. The whole tone of the movie – from the cinematography to the score – is that of a gritty film Michael Mann might make sans the superhero motif. But again, this isn’t a superhero movie. It’s a complex study of good, evil, and the gray area between. This could very well become the first “superhero” movie ever to get a nod in top categories like Best Picture and Best Director. One hopes. One wishes more, though, that Ledger had lived many, many more years. His death is a tragedy. It always will be. His performance is the stuff of legends. It always will be.
