Chances are you know Dan Naturman from his infamous appearance on Last Comic Standing 2, his countless stand-up appearances, or his guest breakthrough role as Danny Glover’s wife in the Lethal Weapon franchise. OK, we lied about the last one, but for years, the Stamford, CT native has made a name for himself for stand-up gigs throughout the world. (You’ve likely seen him on Letterman, Conan, or his own Comedy Central Presents special.)

We recently chatted with the delightfully self-deprecating Naturman and asked him all about his life is on the stage, and why he chose a career in comedy.

They say comedians often are funny because they come from troubled childhoods. Is that correct in your case?
Nothing obvious. Never beaten. Never molested although in fourth grade one of
my classmates asked me to put my mouth on his penis. To the best of my
recollection, I declined. That doesn’t mean I’m not a troubled person, but my
childhood was okay.

Did you always know you’d be a comedian? What’s this that you actually went to law school?
I’ve wanted to be a comedian at least since elementary school, though I can’t say what age exactly. I never thought I’d be insane enought to actually do it though. [I] figured I’d get a real job like everyone else. I don’t know that I had inspirations, per se.

Who were your inspirations?
When I was a kid, I liked Eddie Murphy of course. Tom Lehrer was a favorite as well.

Do you have any hidden talents?
If so, they’re hidden ever from me.

You often discuss the fact you’re single in your act- do enjoy dating?
Dating? I don’t think I’ve been on an actual “date” in several years. I meet
people. We hook up. It may or may not evolve beyond that. Very high school.

Is stand-up really as difficult as they say it is?
Like anything else, if you have no aptitude for it, it’s difficult. For me, anything that involves waking up early in the morning is more difficult than stand-up. One can do a decent job as a stand-up without having that much talent.We call these people hacks. Some of them are multi-millionaires.

Why won’t people leave Britney Spears alone?
I don’t know. I guess because people enjoy watching other people fall apart.

Define sexy.
sexy – adj. 1. of or relating to sexuality. 2. sexually alluring.

Today is Super Tuesday…What do you make of the politicians currently running for president?
As you know from my act, I’m not a politically-oriented person. I used to have a job about Bush doing coke, that’s about it. McCain seems like a person of integrity and his war record is impressive.

Last question…Rick Moranis’ war record is impressive, and by war, we mean his film career. Is he underrated?
I think he’s neither under nor over rated.
